“ ‘When the night falls, deep and stilly,

Through the pantry window Chilly

Grabs great joints of beef and bones.

What’s the use of Sherbet Scones?’

“At last, however, Chillibillibeano went too far. He had stolen the most precious kinds of foods; he had made a laughing-stock of the best detectives; he had thrown defiance in the teeth of the police; he had puzzled the world with his daring brilliant villainy. But now he did something which he had never done before — something which, perhaps, no one had ever done before: he stole a cook.”

“What on earth for?” asked Chee-Chee.

“Why, cooks are very valuable,” said Gub-Gub. “That is, good ones. And this one was marvellously good. She was famous for her pastry — for her rhubarb pie in particular. Her name was Vanilla Verbena. Her mistress used to say that she was worth her weight in gold — and in her case that meant a good deal; because she was as big as a house and weighed a ton.
